A Proviso East High School senior student-athlete has picked up more honors before the end of the year.
Kameron Irvin, who lettered in football, wrestling, and track, recently was recognized as an All State Academic Team nominee by the Illinois High School Association (IHSA). Every IHSA member school was invited to nominate one female student and one male student. Nominees needed to possess a minimum 3.50 grade point average on a 4.0 scale after their seventh semester, have participated in at least two IHSA-sponsored sports or activities during each of the last two years, and demonstrated outstanding citizenship, according to the IHSA website.
In addition, Kameron was awarded the Ken Gerdes Memorial Leadership scholarship by the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association (IWCOA) at their All State Banquet on April 18. Kameron has a 3.68 weighted grade point average and met the requirements as well for wrestling and leadership as recognized by his coaches and selection committee. Only seven high school student-athletes in the state received this award.
The all-state recognition and the Gerdes scholarship are the latest honors for Kameron. He has been all conference and all academic all-conference for three years in wrestling, in which he qualified for the state tournament in 2015. Along with being on the football team for four years, he also runs track, and is a member of the National Honor Society.
Mr. Tony Valente, principal at Proviso East, said that he is proud of Kameron.
"He is to be commended for his effort and his accomplishments," Mr. Valente said. "I wish him well in
all of his future endeavors."
Kameron will attend the University of Dubuque (Iowa) next year, where he will continue his football player.
Congratulations, Kameron, and good luck!
