Mr. Glenn Lid, who retired in 2014 as a science teacher at Proviso East High School and the longtime freshman wrestling coach at Proviso East, recently was inducted into the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Hall of Fame.
Mr. Lid, who has been the freshman wrestling coach at Proviso East since 1979, was inducted in a ceremony on April 16 at the William Tell Holiday Inn in Countryside. He was among 17 inductees in the Hall of Fame’s Class of 2016.
Mr. Lid said that he appreciated the honor.
"I have prided myself in providing an environment for wrestlers who for the majority of the time have never wrestled in their life to become state qualifiers," said Mr. Lid, who also continues to serve as the head golf coach at Proviso East. "We are there for the students who aren’t able to get into or afford
private schools, charter schools, or magnetic schools. We are there to keep kids off the streets and away from negative peer pressure. Many have gone on to become All Americans in college wrestling and are now currently coaches or officials themselves."
This is not the first state or national honor for Mr. Lid. In 2014, he was inducted into the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association (IHSBCA) Hall of Fame as a result of his 25 years as head baseball coach at Proviso East. This followed his induction into the National Teachers Hall of Fame in 2012.
Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent for District 209, said that Mr. Lid is a champion for students who brings out the best in them.
"Glenn Lid is able to work well with students and motivate them to do their best," she said. "This is a deserving honor for him for all of his hard work with the students at Proviso East and I congratulate him on being named to the Hall of Fame."
Congratulations to Mr. Lid!
