Four Proviso East High School football players will continue their playing days and their education at the University of Dubuque (Iowa) next year.
Terry Alm, an offensive lineman, Marcus Givens, a wide receiver, Kameron Irvin, a defensive back and kick returner, and Kahlil Richardson, a defensive end, signed letters of intent to attend the University of Dubuque and play football there in a signing ceremony on April 2 at Proviso East.
The University of Dubuque program is an NCAA Division III program that competes in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Spartans, who also feature a Proviso West High School graduate, Craig Lottie, finished the 2014 season with a 4-6 record.
Mr. Tony Valente, principal at Proviso East, said that the four student-athletes have been great role models in the school.
"This is what you want in sons," he said. "We’re proud of you."
Mr. David Odom, the head football coach at Proviso East, said that the four players have been key components of the building of the football program at Proviso East.
"What I’ve tried to do has required sacrifice from the kids," he said. "These kids have shown that they’re quality human beings."
Mr. Lavance Henderson, Marcus’ grandfather, said that the students did not quit despite the team’s record.
"You kept coming back year after year," Mr. Henderson said. "That’s the sign of a true winner."
