The Fieldhouse at Proviso East High School has been named one of the 20 best high school basketball venues in the state of Illinois by the Chicago Tribune.

In a list that included the Hinsdale Central High School Gym and the North Campus Fieldhouse at Lyons Township High School, the list of "Gym Dandies" featured 20 venues built between 1921 and 1974, with 17 of the venues on the list at least 50 years old. In addition, 16 of the 20 venues can seat at least 2,000 fans.

Reporter Bob Hurst said the following about the Proviso East Fieldhouse, which opened in 1938 and can seat 2,200 people for a game:

"A basketball game is an experience at Proviso East, with potential future stars being watched occasionally by stars from the past who stop by to visit, and some alumni who never miss a game. The U-shaped seating includes a balcony with prominent white pillars. The drum beat coming from the band in the upper deck can’t be missed as it echoes throughout the building."

Mr. Hurst also mentioned the four state championships in boys’ basketball that the Pirates have won (in 1969, 1974, 1991, and 1992), as well as the second-place finish in 2012 and the fourth-place finish in 2013. Proviso East also won 10 state titles in wrestling between 1937 and 1991, and the Fieldhouse was the site of the men’s and women’s volleyball matches during the 1959 Pan American Games in Chicago.

Dr. Patrick Hardy, principal at Proviso East, said that the recognition shows the spirit of Proviso East.

"Our students, staff, and alumni have long been ardent supporters of Proviso East, and the celebrative atmosphere in the Fieldhouse during basketball games is one example of that support," he said. "Attending a basketball game at Proviso East is a positive experience due to the great support that our Pirates receive from students and the community."

Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209, echoed those thoughts, saying that the basketball programs at Proviso East have long been a positive for the school.

"The boys’ and girls’ basketball programs have long been a source of pride for Proviso East, and their success adds to the great atmosphere during games in the Fieldhouse," she said. "It is always nice for our schools to be recognized by the community, and I congratulate our students, staff, and Proviso East fans for creating yet another thing of which we can be proud."
