July 5, 2016 02:15 PM
Five Proviso East Staff and 35 Proviso East students embarked upon an amazing adventure together June 13 through June 17: college exploration.
Our students visited Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College, Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia; Fisk University and Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee, all historically black colleges and universities. In addition, the students visited Georgia Tech University in Atlanta; Purdue University, which is known for its science and engineering programs, in West Lafayette, Indiana; the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee; the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky, and Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.
While away, in addition to touring college campuses, speaking with college representatives, and discussing financial aid, study abroad options and admission procedures, students engaged in leadership and reflective activities. Also while in Atlanta, they explored historic sites such as Ebenezer Baptist Church as well as the King Center and Non-Violence Museum, worked with Georgia Tech instructional staff to learn about and experiment with nanotechnology, and rode the roller coasters of Six Flags over Georgia while building new friendships.
The annual college tour culminates a year of prepping for standardized tests for students, said Ms. Elizabeth Walker, Assistant Principal for Educational Services at Proviso East High School.
