Santa Claus was the star of the morning as more than 50 children received free books, pancakes, and a chance to talk with Santa at the Proviso East High School National Honor Society’s Breakfast with Santa on December 13 in the school’s cafeteria.
The breakfast, sponsored by the Proviso East chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS), was designed to promote literacy at home, said Ms. Marcia LaPorte, a Proviso East art teacher and sponsor of the Proviso East chapter of NHS. Each child who attended received a free breakfast, a picture with Santa, and several books. All parents also received a free breakfast along with strategies and ideas to help promote reading in the home.
Mr. Tony Valente, principal at Proviso East, said that Breakfast with Santa will help to encourage children to read throughout their time in and out of school.
"Literacy is a skill that everyone needs to have, regardless of what career they may decide to have," he said. "Children have a better chance of succeeding in school and in life if they develop a love of reading early in life. I commend the National Honor Society for hosting in what has become an annual event."
The event would not have been possible without the support of sponsors including the Book Worm Angels at Open Books Chicago who contributed more than 400 books to be given out.
