August 26, 2016 02:04 PM
Unity and collaboration were the themes as new District 209 superintendent, Dr. Jesse J. Rodríguez spoke of Proviso East, Proviso West, and PMSA coming together as "One Proviso" at the annual District Institute Day on August 17 at Proviso East High School.
The day included warm greetings for teachers and staff returning for the 2016-2017 school year, some professional development, and a little bit of fun. Throughout the day, they heard from each other in various training workshops that, depending on their job, included CPR training, updates on new laws, and new strategies for helping students succeed.
Mrs. Teresa D. McKelvy, President of the District 209 Board of Education, provided a welcome for the returning staff. She thanked the Proviso East band and the cheerleaders from both Proviso East and Proviso West for appearing, and said that students are the reasons why the district exists.
Dr. Rodríguez thanked staff members for their hard work. This included Tony Shelton, a maintenance worker at PMSA, whom he credited as one of the people who encouraged to come to Proviso. Dr. Rodriguez also spoke on creating pride for Proviso. In addition, staff members heard a message on the importance of reaching out to students to encourage their success from the keynote speaker, consultant Dr. Hector Montenegro.
Teachers and staff members said that they looked forward to the new school year.
