D209 Students Recognized for Excellence in Science and Math

March 22, 2018 05:05 PM
Seventy-two Proviso Township High Schools District 209 students were honored at the 2018 Awards for Excellence in Science and Mathematics program held at PMSA on March 7, 2018. Students were nominated by their science and math teachers for displaying excellence in these subjects. The event was sponsored by PTHS D209, the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) and American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT).
Along with receiving their awards, the honored students were able to thank those math and science teachers who had inspired them during their education. The appreciated teachers included teachers from D209, middle and elementary schools.
During an interview, Mr. Bob Hurley, a retired science teacher at Proviso East High School and an organizer of the ceremony, now in its 24th year, said that he and a group of teachers felt it was important to recognize students who excelled in math and science and their teachers who helped them along the way. He still remembers only recognizing two students at their first award program, however, what was fascinating to him was that coincidentally they both recognized the same middle school teacher for inspiring them to pursue these fields. Since then, Mr. Hurley has organized this event to not only honor Proviso students, but to also draw attention to and reinforce best practices shown in the classroom.
These awards are valuable in that they are nationally recognized by counselors and colleges.
D209 Superintendent, Jesse J. Rodriguez, PhD., thanked the families for supporting their children and teachers for their commitment to excellence and enthusiasm in teaching science and math.
D209 would like to thank the following team for planning a wonderful event that celebrates student success:
Dr. Greta Mitchell-Williams, PMSA Science & Math Chairperson, Matthew Brown, PMSA Choral Ensemble, , Bob Hurley, Kimberly Demitro, David Stadt, Dr. Cynthia Daniels, Kristin Shumake, Alexander Aschoff, Dr. Bozena Suwary, and Dr. Joshua Burton.
