A parent workshop on the topic of "Communicating with Your Teen" was hosted in the Parent Center at Proviso West High School on the evening of Tuesday, November 28th. A group of eight parents participated in the sessions, which were presented in both English and Spanish. This workshop was the first in an anticipated series of parent workshops and activities being planned under the district’s implementation of a community schools model of building parent engagement.

Recognizing the importance of increasing student, family and community engagement, District 209 has developed a family and community engagement strategic initiative. The parent centers at Proviso East and Proviso West, and the parent coordinators who are now working in there are a major component of this initiative. The initiative also includes implementation of a community schools model of increasing parental engagement. Under a community schools model, schools work with a variety of organizations and entities to provide a coordinated set of services, based on the needs of students, parents and community members.

The workshop on November 28th was presented by Noemi Mendieta and Della Ezell from Youth Guidance. District 209 has contracted with Youth Guidance to provide community schools coordination services, and Ms. Mendieta has been hired by Youth Guidance to serve as the community schools coordinator for this project.

Dan Johnson, District 209 Director of Student and Family Services said that "This first workshop was great, with excellent participation, input and energy from all of the participants. I look forward to continuing to work with Noemi and our parent coordinators to develop beneficial workshops and opportunities for our parents."

According to Dan Johnson, the team is developing the calendar of community schools events that will be guided by the parent needs survey which was administered earlier in the fall. In that survey, parents identified the topics in which they were most interested.

Be on the lookout for the upcoming calendar of community schools events!
