Students in Proviso Township High Schools District 209 soon will be in the annual testing season with the ACT college entrance exam and the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) exams scheduled to begin in March.
Juniors will take the official ACT exam on Tuesday, March 15, with March 29 scheduled as the makeup test date. The exam, which is funded by the district, will be administered in the morning. Other students who will not take the exam will arrive early in the afternoon for a shortened school day, with bus schedules adjusted accordingly.
The PARCC exam, a state-required test, will be administered beginning the following day on March 16. Students enrolled in English 3, Advanced Placement English Language and Composition, Algebra 2, and Integrated Math 3 courses will take the exams, regardless of their current year in school.
Students will take three test units each for English and math spread over several days during the school day. If students are absent on any of the test dates, they will be assigned to makeup test sessions.
Finally, students enrolled in biology and Advanced Placement biology classes will take the state-required Illinois Science Assessment in May. The specific dates will be announced for the exam, which will be administered during the regular school day.
It is important that students and their families take the exams seriously even though the assessments will be challenging, said Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209.
"We encourage students to give their best so that they can get an accurate picture of their strengths and areas needing additional work," Dr. Collins-Hart said. "Perseverance, along with a good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast, and preparing for the exam by studying the lessons of the courses, will help them to do their best."
