In honor of Black History Month, Proviso West was thrilled to welcome special guests from the Chicago Auto Show to the campus on Monday, February 12, 2018. In cooperation with the Kia Motors Corporation, the Driving for Your Dreams Literacy Tour engaged nearly 650 students in interactive sessions concerning STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math), car-buying literacy, academic achievement, goal setting, and career planning.
Jeff Fortson, host and executive producer of SiriusXM’s Channel 141 weekly multicultural automotive show, "Auto Trends with,’’ led a series of sessions focusing on the car-buying process, sharing tips to encourage students to make sound financial decisions aligned to the goals they have for their future. Students also interacted with Brian Peterson, one of thirty minority car designers world-wide, as he shared his journey from being a student not unlike those at Proviso West, to finding success as a leader in an elite career field.
Superintendent of PTHS D209, Jesse J. Rodriguez, Ph.D., said, "We welcomed the partnership with KIA Motors and Jeff Fortson as it furthers the District’s vision of preparing our graduates for college, careers and to serve as contributing members of a dynamic global society. Through the interactive workshops, students built their knowledge in the field, gained real world experience, and had meaningful discussions with industry leaders. I believe that our collaborative approach to enhancing the D209 experience will further ignite their passion to pursue careers in the growing fields of STEAM."
Proviso West principal, Dr. Nia Abdullah, further explained that the purpose of the event was to expose students to career pathways that align to STEAM curricula because all too often students are not aware of the various career opportunities that rely on STEAM skills.
The event extended beyond the classroom to include an up close and personal experience with hybrid technology and the Niro, Kia’s only dedicated hybrid vehicle.
"These sessions brought to life both the technical and artistic elements of the automotive development process and showcased Mr. Peterson’s design work in the interior cabin of the Niro. We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from Mr. Fortson and Mr. Peterson and are excited to put their encouragement and guidance to wonderful use!" said Ms. Kate Foster College & Career Academy and AP Coordinator at Proviso West.
