A Proviso West High School special education teacher was honored by the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 Board of Education at its regular meeting on Tuesday, October 13, 2015, at Proviso West High School.
Mrs. Devon Harris has been designated for the Award of Recognition in the Illinois State Board of Education Those Who Excel education awards program. Mr. Oscar Hawthorne, principal at Proviso West, said that she has been instrumental in making significant changes to improve the academic performance and career readiness of special education students at Proviso West.
"She connects with students on a social-emotional level and genuinely cares about their well-being,"
Mr. Hawthorne said of Mrs. Harris, who also is the sponsor of Girls Club at Proviso West and an assistant cheerleading coach. "Mrs. Harris is most deserving of the Those Who Excel Recognition Award. She brings out the best in young people embodies everything a resilient and caring teacher should be."
Mrs. Harris, along with six other District 209 educators, will be honored at the Those Who Excel awards banquet in Normal on Saturday, October 17.
Later in the meeting, Mrs. Theresa Kelly, Board president, said in her Board President’s report that the District is moving in the right direction.
She said that the switch to Board committees have allowed for "all stakeholders to have a voice," and that other programs have had success. "Let’s keep moving toward the open door of success," Mrs. Kelly said.
