District 209 Academic Hall of Famers, Superintendent Honored by Board of Education

The valedictorians and salutatorians from Proviso East High School and Proviso West High School and the research scholars of distinction from Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy were honored for their achievements by the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 Board of Education at its regular meeting on Tuesday, June 14, at PMSA.
 
The following students were noted for their academic achievements, extracurricular activities at school, and other successes:
  • Dalal El Barbarawi, who was named the valedictorian at Proviso East. She will study chemistry at Roosevelt University in Chicago in the fall. She was awarded a total of $1,596,616 in scholarships.
  • Cinia McCray, who was named the salutatorian at Proviso East. She will study biology and play basketball at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina, in the fall. She was awarded a total of $109,209 in scholarships.
  • Syeda Ali, who was named the valedictorian at Proviso West. She will study engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago in the fall. She was awarded a total of $200,000 in scholarships.
  • Verenice Payan, who was named the salutatorian at Proviso West. She will study biology at the University of Illinois at Chicago in the fall. She was awarded a total of $308,908 in scholarships.
  • Sol Beltran, who was named the research scholar of distinction at PMSA. She will study biology at Dominican University in the fall. She was awarded a total of $411,600 in scholarships.
  • Lizbeth Garcia, who was named the research scholar of distinction at PMSA. She will study a to-be-determined science field at Northwestern University. She was awarded a total of $232,500 in scholarships.
Each received a plaque and certification of appreciation from the Board. The six scholars also will be inducted into the District 209 Academic Hall of Fame.
Also honored by the Board was Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209, who is leaving after eight years as superintendent. She received a bouquet of flowers and a plaque from the Board reading that the Board presents its "Service Award" to Dr. Collins-Hart in "appreciation for eight years of outstanding, loyal, and dedicated service" to the District.
 
Mrs. Teresa D. McKelvy, president of the Board, praised Dr. Collins-Hart for the "high quality and the commitment to excellence" that she brought to the District.
 
"As you enter this next chapter of your life, we hope that you remember us and everything we accomplished together," Mrs. McKelvy said. "May you leave our district knowing that you have made a remarkable contribution and have touched our lives, the lives of the students, administration, faculty, staff, and Board of Education. Congratulations to you on your appointment as superintendent of the Hazelwood (Missouri) School District. We know that you will do a phenomenal job and we wish you nothing but the best."
