24 PMSA Students Honored by Board of Education for Academic Excellence

Twenty-four Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy students were honored for excellence by the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 Board of Education at its regular meeting on Tuesday, May 12, at PMSA.
 
The students were honored for excellence ranging from perfect attendance during the current school to earning a perfect score on the ACT college entrance exam to earning more than $1.2 million in scholarships, said Dr. Bessie Karvelas, principal at PMSA.
 
Nadia Love, a PMSA senior, earned $1,286,212 in scholarships, Dr. Karvelas said. A recipient of the National Achievement Scholarship Award, Nadia was the PMSA student who earned the highest amount of scholarship money.
 
In addition, Erick Rodriguez, a PMSA junior, was recognized for earning the first perfect 36 on the ACT in PMSA history. Dr. Karvelas said that Erick’s achievement was rare, in that only about 1,400 of the 1.85 million students who take the ACT earn a perfect score.
 
"His achievement on the ACT is significant and rare," Dr. Karvelas said. On average, less than one-tenth of one percent of all test takers earns the perfect score. Congratulations to our student and to our teachers for the academic preparation that our PMSA students was given in order to achieve this accolade."
 
Also, 22 PMSA students were honored for achieving perfect attendance during the 2014-15 school year. Dr. Karvelas said that they persevered despite inclement weather during the winter. The following students were recognized:

Tuesday’s meeting was also the first regular meeting for the Board since its organizational meeting on April 30. On April 30, Ms. Claudia Medina and Mr. Ned Wagner were sworn in as new Board members, In addition, Mrs. Theresa Kelly was named the new Board President, while Mr. Kevin McDermott was named the new Board Vice President, and Ms. Medina was named Board Secretary.
 
One of the first actions that the new Board took was in changing the start time of future meetings. Beginning with the next meeting on June 9, the meetings will begin at 6:15 p.m. with the Board in closed session. The Board will then reconvene in open session at 7:30 p.m. and conduct the business on the agenda.
 
"I’m thinking that will be more community friendly and you don’t have to wait for us," Mrs. Kelly said.
