The Proviso Township High Schools District 209 Board of Education recognized five Proviso West High School students for their achievements in a regional technology competition and 12 Proviso West teachers for their roles in advancing the Advanced Placement program at the school at their regular meeting on Tuesday, April 12, at Proviso West.
Luigi Cabantog, Zavier Donati, Luis Ortega, Jesus Pena, and Jose Solano, all Proviso West sophomores, recently qualified to compete at the National Naval Sea Perch Competition sponsored by the U.S. Navy May 20 and 21 at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The qualification came after the team, nicknamed the "Sea Panthers," placed second at the Chicago Regional Sea Perch Competition at the Great Lakes Naval Station in Great Lakes, Illinois. The five students are either cadets in the Proviso West Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) program or students in the school’s Project Lead the Way pre-engineering program, said Mr. Oscar Hawthorne, principal at Proviso West.
"They’re representing not only Proviso West and the NJROTC, but Proviso Township as a whole," Mr. Hawthorne said.
Mr. Hawthorne added that one of the students, Luigi Cabantog, also was recently selected to be a representative on the Illinois Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Student Advisory Board.
Also honored by the Board were 12 teachers who teach Advanced Placement courses at Proviso West. Mr. Hawthorne said that the efforts of the teachers helped District 209 as a whole be placed on the District AP Honor Roll in late 2015.
"These teachers are responsible for adding three AP Courses, facilitating our first AP summer boot camp, and almost doubling the number of AP test participants over the past two years," Mr. Hawthorne said. "They identified with the vision of providing AP and college credit opportunities for all Proviso West students."
The following Proviso West High School teachers were recognized by the Board:
- Ms. Evelyn Abelar, world languages teacher
