The Proviso East High School and Proviso West High School marching bands and drumlines took on a strong field at the 12th annual Proviso East Battle of the Bands in the packed Proviso West gymnasium on May 17.

While two-time defending champion Trotwood-Madison (Ohio) High School again took home the top prize in Division 1, Proviso West won several prizes of its own in Division 2, including first place for best auxiliary and best drumline in the overall contest. Proviso also won first place in the drumline competition and won second place in the overall competition, just behind visiting Oak Park (Michigan) High School.

BattleBands2-0514-380"The kids really enjoyed themselves," said Mr. Sam Atcher, band director at Proviso West. "It was a way for us to learn from the other bands and to elevate ourselves as a result of that."

The Battle of the Bands was moved indoors to the gymnasium at Proviso West due to construction on the field house at Proviso East and the threat of rain. However, that did not stop the bands from performing a high-energy show from the roughly 1,000 people in attendance.

Mr. Reginald Wright, band director at Proviso East, said that the Proviso East performed well as the final show of the day. They did not compete officially as the host school.

BattleBands3-0514-300"The whole thing went well," he said. "It was well attended. The bands performed well. They put on a good show."

Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209, said that the Battle of the Bands has been among the premiere high school band events in the area for some time.

"The Battle of the Bands is a great showcase for the talents of our marching bands," she said. "I congratulate Mr. Wright, Mr. Atcher, and their bands for a wonderful show, and I look forward to seeing this event continue to grow."
