Hillside, IL...The Proviso West High School Competition Cheer Team made history in its first ever state contest, winning first place in its division.

The team competed in the Illinois High School Association Invitational Cheerleading Competition on January 5 at Lake Zurich High School as one of 20 teams competing across ten divisions. Competing in the small varsity division, the Proviso West team consisted of 12 members from both its junior varsity and varsity squads.

Carla Williams, the team’s coach, said that the win was the result of hard work and practice.

"We spent several weeks practicing our routines and even gave up our Christmas break to follow an extremely intense and demanding practice schedule," she said. "Our hard work, time and dedication paid off as the Panther Cheerleaders took first place in our division."

The end result was a first-place finish in the small varsity division, with more success planned for the future, Ms. Williams said.

"This was the first time in Proviso West history that a cheer team entered an IHSA competition, but it will definitely not be the last," she said.

The team members who participated were Ciera Smith, Ariana Skinner, Kiechelle Dixon, Briana Hester, Nicole Kraewic, Lauren Miller, Imari Robinson, Rhymia Raspberry, Shakira Turner, Alexis Broom, Tavonta Miller, and Chantine Adams.

Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209, said that the team’s victory was evidence of the deep talent at the district’s schools.

"We have so many students who are extremely talented and will excel in whatever field they pursue or whatever interests they have," she said. "When people come together in pursuit of that goal, there is almost nothing they cannot accomplish."

Dr. Roudell Kirkwood, principal at Proviso West, echoed those thoughts, saying that he was proud of the team.

"I think they did an outstanding job," he said. "These young athletes will build upon this success next year to compete at the state level."
