Hillside, IL...With prom season only a month away, Proviso West High School hallways are filled with excited chatter about dates, curfews, party plans, and—for some—that all-important question of "what dress are you wearing?"

Proviso West teacher, Ms. Jesukaitis, helped students to put that energy to work in her fashion technology class. The class is filled with senior girls. She had each of the students design their dream prom dress and submit their design in a competition that would help cut the cost of prom for parents and allow students to win the prom dress of their dreams. One of her students, Virginia Carter, won the competition and will now have her design brought to life.

"It was a tough competition for the class based on a unique design and a 100-word essay about specific design elements," said Ms. Jesukaitis.  "Virginia stood out from all of the Chicago Public Schools students and students in our neighboring schools. She displayed great insight in her essay, and her design reflected a modern twist. We are really proud of her. I can't think of a better way to make her senior year more memorable."

Virginia’s mom, Ms. Carter, was equally as impressed.

"I am thrilled that Virginia won," said Ms. Carter. "I was so happy and she was too."

Students across the state of Illinois participated in the competition sponsored by Princess Closet. The non-profit organization promotes self-confidence, individual beauty, and diversity by providing new and virtually new prom dresses and accessories free to high school girls in Illinois. They were established in 2010 and are well known for transforming young ladies into the belles of the ball. Princess Closet director, Maria Davalos, said that even when competing against students from across the state, Virginia’s design and essay stood out among the crowd.

"Virginia won the Princess Closet Curvy Girl Contest," said Davalos. "She entered her dress and an essay in our competition, and she really stood out. Now Virginia will have a designer actually make that dress for her."

Virginia will not only have the prom dress of her dreams created for her, she will also get free make-up, a hairstyle, shoes, and accessories—making it an even more exciting prom season for this Proviso senior.

"I drew the dress that I’ve always envisioned for my prom, and everyone loved it," said Virginia. "Ms. Jesukaitis had the whole class enter the competition, and it was really fun and exciting. My parents and I are really happy. It feels great that I don’t have to pay anything to get ready for prom."

Princess Closet encourages other students in need of prom dresses to visit their website at http://princess-closet.org.  Davalos says that they have over 2000 dresses and 80% are new. They also have 300 pairs of new shoes and accessories to give to senior students at no cost.

Congratulations, Virginia! We are so proud of you.
