Prize Patrol Moves Through Proviso West

December 20, 2013 03:00 PM
Students at Proviso West High School have another reason to do their best in getting to class on time and to do well on state testing.

The Proviso West Prize Patrol has been making the rounds at the school at different times during the first semester, awarding gift cards and other prizes to students who either met or exceeded state standards on the Prairie State Achievement Exam (PSAE) last spring or who have not been tardy to class for a quarter.

"This is an ongoing effort to recognize students who are not only excelling academically, but making good choices," said Mr. Oscar Hawthorne, principal at Proviso West.

W-PrizePatrol2-smOn October 25, Mr. Hawthorne and Mr. Calvin Davis, assistant principal for athletics and activities, visited classrooms, awarding $50 and $100 gift cards to students who met or exceeded state standards on the PSAE. All prizes, including a 32-inch flat screen television, were paid for using proceeds from fundraisers or donations. The prize patrol also visited classes on November 4 and 5 to recognize students who did not receive a tardy to a class during the first quarter of the school year.

Gabriela Gabarin, a Proviso West senior, was one of the students who won a $100 gift card on October 25.

"I didn’t expect it," she said. "But I thought I would pass the test."

Mr. Hawthorne said that students are motivated when they are recognized in front of their classmates.

"Our students responded extremely well to the prize patrol," he said. "Students appreciated being recognized in front of their peers. Students are motivated because they can see their classmates have done well."
