"The Super Teen award is given to students who exemplify academic achievement and a commitment to community service," said David Mammano, founder and CEO of NextStepU Magazine
Nick Tarleton is a Super Teen award winner. The national contest awards extraordinary teens who have worked to stand out from hundreds of applicants by taking on leadership roles in their communities, overcoming adversity or demonstrating dedication and perseverance. Nick’s mom, Ms. Tarleton, admits that the description fits her son perfectly.
"This is great. I taught Nick when he was young, that anything he wants to achieve, he needs to go for it," she said. "That's just how he is. He's extremely aware, willing to learn, and thirsty for knowledge."
Nick is a newly inducted member of the National Society of High School Scholars. He has earned the School Citizen of the Year Award from West 40 as well as the Cook County Sheriff’s Youth Service Medal of Honor Award. In addition to earning awards throughout the community, at PMSA, Nick is a member of the Class of 2012 Club, Newspaper Club, Go Green Club, and PMSA’s wildly successful PULSE Program.
As winner of the Super Teen award, Nick’s photo was featured on the cover of the March/April issue of NextStepU Magazine
). His story of being a Super Teen was also published inside the magazine. Nick says his time here at PMSA has helped him to become nationally recognized and ready for the world.
"It is great to be able to look at the cover of a magazine and see that everyone across the nation can see me on a magazine," said Nick. "I have grown as a leader here at PMSA, and this school has become my second home. The extracurricular activities that are offered here have helped a great deal. Also, the teachers and support staff have become like my second parents. I am just really motivated by them, the way they teach, and the way that they support students here. They have helped me to become nationally recognized."
Nick’s mom agreed.
"I have set an example as parent, but I also have to thank some of the teachers at PMSA. There are several teachers who really listen to him. When teachers take the time to listen to a child it really helps to affirm that they are loved, wanted, and they can accomplish anything."
With a 3.8 G.P.A. and an ACT score well above the state average, Nick has received over $900,000.00 in scholarship offers. Next year he will be a freshman at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Congratulations Nick! You are a vital part of Proviso Rising!
