West Students Recognized For High Attendance at Tutoring Sessions

May 3, 2013 08:50 AM
Hillside, IL...Thirteen Proviso West High School students were recognized for their high attendance at Sylvan Learning Centers’ tutoring sessions earlier this semester at an award ceremony May 1 at the school.

The students attended a minimum of 90 percent of the tutoring sessions, which were held twice a week for eight weeks in January through the middle of March at Proviso West. As a reward, they were given tablet computers.

With the extra help in reading and later math, the students told of raising their grades and being ready for the ACT/PSAE that took place on April 23 and 24.

"It addressed the challenges we have in our world today," said Ms. Connie Jesukaitis, a family and consumer teacher at Proviso West who was the site coordinator for Sylvan. "This really calmed the fears of the state testing."

Mr. Gary Lewis, contract manager for Sylvan, said that the tutoring sessions had an average of 24 students attending. They received help from tutors, most of whom are teachers at Proviso West. He said that for the 13 students who were honored, the high attendance was an achievement.

"For high school students, that can be a challenge because there are a lot of competing activities," he said.

Dr. Roudell Kirkwood, principal at Proviso West, credited parents for their support of their students in getting the extra help, and urged both to continue working hard on academics.

"This tells us that when parents are supportive, students are successful," he said. "You must continue. To be the best, you’ve got to go above and beyond. You have to make sure you have the motivation to succeed."

Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209, said that she was proud of the students for doing the extra work to succeed in the classroom.

"The supplemental education services (SES) tutoring is a gold if students will take advantage of it," she said. "This year, we have worked tirelessly to get students to use this valuable, free resource. I hope more students and parents will participate because this continues to be an underutilized opportunity. These students deserve credit for seeking the help they needed to succeed in the classroom. They did more than just the bare minimum, and as a result, they are succeeding. They are an example for other students to follow as we strive to increase student achievement."
