The 15th Annual Proviso West NJROTC Military Ball was held on April 13, 2017, at the Ashton Place in Willowbrook. The Proviso West NJROTC Military Ball is an annual gala affair that is planned and attended by the cadets. Male cadets dress in formal uniforms and female cadets may wear a formal dress. Cadets enjoy coming together as a team to celebrate ancient naval customs and traditions. Some of the highlights of this year’s ball included: a reception line, parading of the Military Ball Royal Court (as nominated by their peers), POW/MIA ceremonial readings, dinner, dancing, and music.

Those recognized during the reception line, also known as the Sword Arch, included:

Superintendent of District 209 Jesse J. Rodriguez, Ph.D.
PTHS D209 Board of Education member Ned Wagner,
Principal of Proviso West Oscar Hawthorne,
Assistant principal of Proviso West  Joseph Kosina,
Senior Naval Science instructor Commander O’Carroll,
Senior Naval Science instructor Commander Tooker,
Chief Petty Officer Whitten,
Senior Chief Hawley-Williams
Master Chief Goggins

Cadet "Top Three:"
 Commander Master Chief Viviana Moreno
Executive Officer Commander David Perez
Regimental Commanding Officer Captain Shalisha Hill

Before dinner, cadets called attention to the Prisoners of War/Missing in Action (POW/MIA) table. The tradition of setting a separate table in honor of prisoners of war and missing comrades has been in place since the end of the Vietnam War. The POW/MIA table is set as a reminder to reflect on those who are no longer with us and remember the families of those who have given up their lives for this country. Experiencing naval traditions during the Military Ball allows cadets to be grateful and reflect on their history.

Cadets also participated in a talent show that included song and dance routines. "The talent show gives students an opportunity to show some of the different talents we wouldn’t normally see throughout the year," said Master Chief Goggins.

Cadets shined in their elegant gowns and military uniforms while displaying pride for all the accomplishments and friendships that were created throughout the year. Excitement, however, grew among cadets as they celebrated the announcing of the Military Ball Royal Court.

Military Ball Royal Court winners:
·         Freshman Lady: Kaila Ramiro                          Freshman Lord: Tondea Wilkerson

·         Senior Queen: Viviana Moreno                        Senior King: David Perez

"I find it amazing how our cadets are able to do what is done in the real Navy by putting together a Military Ball for 285 cadets and pulling it off with little to no mistakes. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our cadets," said Master Chief Goggins.

The Proviso West NJROTC cadets also gave a special recognition to Mr. Hawthorne by presenting to him a plaque as an expression of gratitude for his continued support to the NJROTC program.
Master Chief Goggins said, "Mr. Hawthorne has been so instrumental to the program. Since the first day he arrived he has been nothing short of outstanding to the NJROTC. He had a vested interest in what we do. "

The 2017 West Military Ball was a wonderful event and PTHS D.209 thanks the Military Ball Committee for their successful efforts in putting together another unforgettable event.
