Forest Park, IL...The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) has announced this year’s state scholars—seniors who rank in the top 10 percent in the state of Illinois. The Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy boasts 20 state scholars in this year’s graduating class.
The State Scholar Program recognizes Illinois high school students for outstanding academic achievement. Their selection is based on ACT and SAT I test score results and students’ individual class rank at the end of their junior year of high school. State scholar designation provides honorary recognition for the state’s top students. While PMSA has always been known as a catalyst for greatness, the number of students on this year’s ranking gives further confirmation.
"I was ecstatic to learn that 20 PMSA seniors have been named Illinois State Scholars," said PMSA principal, Mrs. Echols. "We are all so proud of our students’ accomplishments. This type of recognition places them with an elite group of students who have worked extremely hard during the past four years. This is a prime example of hard work paying off. Kudos to each of them on a job well done!"
Students expressed gratitude that after four years of tough academic study, their hard work has been recognized across the state.
"It feels awesome to be recognized for all of our hard work," said PMSA senior, Jesus Soto. "It has all paid off. This recognition definitely gives me an extra push. It has motivated me to keep working to excel."
PMSA seniors Derek Kwok and Gabriela Berndt agreed.
"I feel honored because I’ve always tried my hardest," said Derek. "I put forth everything I could. I study a lot, and that has really paid off."
Gabriela said, "It’s a really nice honor. I’ve worked really hard in school. It’s cool."
For PMSA senior Bahja Norwood, it gives her confirmation that being a bookworm can be kind of cool.
"I was shocked," she said. "This feels nice because all of my life I’ve been the bookworm nerd. This makes me feel like I really do stand out in the big picture. That’s all that really matters."
Congratulations to the following students:
