Proviso East Student Council Helps Kids in Need Through "Project Night Night"

January 20, 2012 01:26 PM
According to statistics, 1 in 50 American children will face homelessness in his or her lifetime. With that in mind, Proviso East’s student council is working to help support homeless children and promote education and literacy through the national charity campaign, Project Night Night.

"Project Night Night is an effort that brings us students together in making blankets and packages for children in homeless shelters," said Proviso East senior and student council member, Shontae Chambers. "We want to work to help needy kids in our area. It’s a good cause that the children can appreciate. We just want to do all that we can to give back."

Project Night Night donates over 25,000 Night Night Packages each year to homeless children who need childhood essentials to feel secure, cozy, ready to learn, and significant. Each Night Night Package contains a new security blanket, an age-appropriate children's book, and a stuffed animal -- all nestled inside of a new canvas tote bag. Proviso East’s Student Council meets after school to make the blankets by hand, collect donations, and fill tote bags for distribution. Students have partnered with the local homeless shelter, West Suburban Public Action to Deliver Shelter (PADS), to ensure that their efforts help children here in their community.

"We always enjoy having the support of the local community to assist us in meeting the basic needs of our participants," said West Suburban PADS’ Executive Director, Lynda Shueler. "For high school students to be involved in something like this, is wonderful. We are so glad that they picked us."

Project Night Night began in November and will continue until May 2012. Students have already donated over 250 blankets and totes to West Suburban PADS.

"These students are a great group," said Proviso East Student Council sponsor, Ms. Laporte. "It’s been a lot of fun. This project has really empowered them and helped them to feel more confident that they can make a difference."
