A special ceremony at Proviso East High School was held for Rayshawn Gay, a senior at Proviso East and linebacker on the varsity football team. On February 1, Gay officially signed his letter of intent with Northern Illinois University.
The signing was part of National Signing Day, the first day that a senior can sign a letter of intent to play college football.
In the school's Social Room, Gay was congratulated by his teammates, coaches, school counselors, teachers, and alumni. The table on the stage was covered with a tablecloth that proudly displayed a Proviso East Pirate and had a letter of intent from Northern Illinois University, ready to be signed. Gay was accompanied by his mother, father, and grandmother, who sat next to him as people in the room expressed their gratitude towards Gay and congratulated him on his accomplishments.
Dr. Colbert, Director of Athletics and Assistant Principal at Proviso East, started the ceremony by reminding Rayshawn to, "…understand what your parents and grandparents had to do to make this happen. This is a parents’ and grandparents’ dream and we are so proud of you and want to let you know that you now represent, as you always have, not just Rayshawn but your parents, your principals, your coaches, your teammates, and when you go to Northern Illinois and we look at that roster book, we are going to be proud to see Proviso. We are proud that you are going to be representing us at NIU."
Gay's mother was overwhelmed with excitement and stated, "I like to thank all the coaches and teammates for all the encouraging words that have been said to Rayshawn. I stood in that stand every game and I didn’t miss one. There are so many of you that were supposed to be here and went unrecognized, but I saw what you did. I saw your effort and I was proud of every one of you because you kept going. Without any of you, my boy wouldn’t even be on the field if he didn’t have a team."
The hard work and dedication Gay always displays on and off the field, along with his accomplishment of receiving a full athletic scholarship, has served as an inspiration to the Proviso schools community.
Congratulations, Rayshawn! We are Proviso Proud!
