Maywood, IL...Proviso East assistant principal, Mrs. Lang, is an educational leader. She is devoted to her students, her profession, and her desire to help Proviso East High School rise to the top. That is a part of the reason she was recently named Omega Psi Phi’s 2011 Educator of the Year.
"One of the cardinal principles of our fraternity is scholarship," said Omega Psi Phi representative, Larry Smith. "We put a great emphasis on education. There were nominations of 13 educators in total in the West Suburbs from Rockford to Dupage County. We chose Mrs. Lang based on her relationship with her students, her rapport with those within the community, and her effectiveness as a leader and as an educator. She has a proven track record. She is effective wherever she goes, and we are honored to recognize Mrs. Lang for the work that she has done and for the impact she’s had."
Mrs. Lang is serving her first year as assistant principal at Proviso East High School. Nonetheless, to get an idea of Mrs. Lang’s impact, all you have to do is talk with a few students. When asked if Lang deserved the award, many of them gave resounding approval.
"Most definitely," said Proviso East senior, Jennifer Lee. "Mrs. Lang is an outstanding educator. She’s just amazing. She’s very inspiring and encouraging. Mrs. Lang hasn’t been here that long, but since she’s been here, she has really changed our school for the better. She really cares about the students, and she cares about our school."
Proviso East senior Kamia Smart agreed. She says that they see Mrs. Lang as someone they can always rely on.
"Mrs. Lang is really someone that we can come to and someone that we can count on," she said. "When she is in the halls, she makes sure that we get to class. If you need help, you can come to her. We just look forward to seeing her every day. She never puts anyone down. She is always inspiring and motivating to us. She really cares."
In addition to working with students, Mrs. Lang works with her peers and fellow educators to promote educational leadership that is rigorous and relevant. Lang’s goal is to foster student learning at higher levels with a focus on student achievement and success across the board. For her, that would be the ultimate accomplishment.
"I want to help create a positive school culture that fosters school and community pride," said Lang. "Students have to take pride in their school and in their community. I am very grateful and honored to be assistant principal here and to be named the Omega Psi Phi 2011 Educator of the Year. I know the importance of this honor and the responsibility that comes with it. I promise to continue to keep high expectations for all of my students. I truly believe it's my purpose to pave the way for students to become productive citizen in today's society."
