Maywood, IL...Each year the Maywood community organization, Operation Uplift, honors young people during their annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Awards Luncheon. This year’s honoree was Proviso East sophomore, DaMarco Green. He was presented with the Leon S. Brown Youth Award for his superb leadership and service to the Maywood community.
"DaMarco Green has done a number of volunteer services throughout our community," said Ms. Northica Stone, President and CEO of Operation Uplift. "He has even influenced his peers to join him in his efforts. He has the desire to help and do positive things for his community. As a sophomore, he has displayed great influence and leadership ability."
DaMarco works for the Maywood Youth Mentoring Program. He has already earned 900 community service hours for the work he has done with Village of Maywood's Special Events Commission. You may have seen him around the Village of Maywood supporting popular events including: Maywood Fest, Senior Citizens’ Prom, Maywood’s Winter Wonderland, and the Senior Citizens’ Christmas Party. He even recruited friends to help serve at local events as well.
"They really needed my help," said DaMarco. "It felt good to actually help someone instead of just focusing on myself. I really wasn’t doing it to get an award."
DaMarco’s mother, Dawn Williams-Rone, serves on the Maywood Special Events Commission. She says DaMarco’s involvement in the community is all about giving him and other local high school students an opportunity to be a part of something positive.
"DaMarco is active in the community because I am active in the community," she said. "If kids see their parents being involved and doing things, then they will be more than willing to do the same. The youth are very talented, and they just want to be a part of something. If you give a kid a chance, they can achieve anything."
Congratulations DaMarco! Keep up the excellent work!
