Dr. Bessie Karvelas, Principal, PMSA
Forest Park, IL...Dr. Bessie Karvelas has a simple goal for Proviso Math and Science Academy.
"My vision is to make Proviso Math and Science Academy one of the top 100 schools in the country," she said. "We want to move from good to great."
Dr. Karvelas is the new principal at PMSA, having started on August 8. She replaces Mrs. Kim Echols, who became the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction on July 1. Dr. Karvelas had spent her entire career in the Chicago Public Schools, teaching English for 23 years at all levels, including basic, Advanced Placement, and International Baccalaureate. She most recently served as principal at Hubbard High School. During a six-year tenure as principal at Lincoln Park High School, the school was rated among the top 100 high schools in the country by Newsweek magazine, due to having the highest number of Advanced Placement exams with a passing rate of 3 or more and being ranked first and second in Illinois by Newsweek.
Dr. Karvelas stated that PMSA was an attractive position because of its new Advanced Placement Program. PMSA recently introduced three AP classes – English language, Biology, and Calculus AB, with opportunities to earn AP credit through exams.
"I wanted to do things on a grander scale," Dr. Karvelas said. "I had a vision of what a perfect, utopian school would be."
Dr. Karvelas said she is a firm believer in the concept that, "It takes a village to raise a child." She said that she wants to work with faculty and staff at PMSA to expand the AP program and eventually start a National Honor Society.
"I plan on working very closely with the teachers to take it to the next level," she said. "I want to work very closely with the parents and build the PTO program so parents are a part of it."
Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209, said that Dr. Karvelas is a good fit for PMSA.
"Dr. Karvelas brings a wealth of experience in working at the highest levels to this position," she said. "I am convinced that she will continue the tradition of excellence that has been established at PMSA. She not only brings experience in moving students to academic excellence, she also brings the positive energy that is needed in our District. I am very excited about her appointment."
