Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors in Proviso Township High Schools District 209 took tests to gauge where they stand academically on Wednesday, October 16.
At Proviso Math and Science Academy, all 591 students who were scheduled to take the test were present, a first in school history.
Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors participated in all-school testing at Proviso East High School, Proviso West High School, and PMSA. The Board of Education has set a goal of meeting or exceeding state test performance by 2016. The District is aggressively putting forth many efforts to reach that target, with test prep as one part of that. Freshmen took the EXPLORE test, while sophomores took the PLAN. Juniors took a practice ACT, which will prepare them for the ACT that they will take along with the WorkKeys as part of the Prairie State Achievement Examination (PSAE) April 23 and 24, 2014.
All three exams test students in reading, math, English, and science.
Dr. Bessie Karvelas, principal at PMSA, said that she stressed the importance of taking the tests seriously at assemblies held for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors prior to test day.
"I discussed how the assessments are scored, the importance of them, and how the results will help us inform instruction," she said. "When we as educators set high standards for our students, they will strive to reach those standards."
The results from the tests are expected in November.
