During a series of open houses this fall, prospective students and their families can learn about the programs and activities available at Proviso Math and Science Academy. Applications for admission are being accepted in November and December, with a January 15, 2013 deadline.
PMSA, located at 8601 West Roosevelt Road in Forest Park, will host open houses for prospective students on Thursday, November 14, and Thursday, December 12, both from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. These are the final open houses for admission for the 2014-15 school term. Attending an open house is not a requirement for admission, but it is recommended. During the open houses, the students and their families will see a presentation about the classes and programs at PMSA, take a tour of the school, and meet with faculty, staff members, and students.
"This is a great opportunity to see what one of the best schools in the state of Illinois is all about," said Dr. Bessie Karvelas, principal of PMSA. "We nurture future leaders, and we look forward to meeting the students who will be the next leaders from our school district."
The open house will feature a plethora of activities for students to examine. Among the highlights are the PMSA jazz band performing during the opening session, the math team competing in games where students "use their inductive and deductive reasoning skills to figure out patterns and equations," one of PMSA’s science teachers performing a dissection of an animal, and the student-built PMSA robot being set in action by the school’s Monty Python Robotics Team.
Students may begin apply for admission to PMSA through January 15, 2014. All applications must be hand-delivered to the PMSA main office by that deadline or postmarked by the January 15, 2014, deadline. To apply, prospective students must live in the District by the time they would attend. They also must submit an application form which can be downloaded at pths209.org, recommendations from both their middle school math and science teachers, school transcripts for seventh grade sent by the school, and results from the EXPLORE test administered at the middle schools.
vents, and must be submitted or postmarked no later than January 15, 2014, with the selection process taking place in late January and early February.
