Hillside, IL...The Proviso West Holiday Basketball Tournament has long been considered one of the top high school basketball tournaments in the country.

It can now add largest to its titles, as it has grown from 16 teams to 32 teams.

The 52nd edition of the traditional holiday hoops tournament tips off in the Sports Arena at Proviso West at 9 a.m. on Saturday, December 22, with a game between Oswego and Lincoln Park. It will be the first of 61 games over a nine-day period, culminating with the tournament’s championship game at 4 p.m. on December 31.

The field, which also includes Proviso West, the host, and Proviso East, last year’s state championship runner-up and the defending Holiday Tournament Champion, is an expanded 32-team list. Not only does it feature top teams from around the Chicago area such as Hillcrest and New Trier, it also includes teams from outside the area - Rockford Auburn and Crespi Carmelite of Encino, California. Crespi Carmelite is the first school from outside of the state of Illinois to play in the tournament, said Joe Spagnolo, the tournament’s director.

"We had a high demand of teams that wanted to come in," he said. "Instead of saying ‘no,’ we thought this was the way [to accommodate them]."

Tickets booklets for all 61 games are still available for $75 each at the Proviso West Circle Drive Box Office, which opens at 8:15 a.m. Saturday. Individual tickets are $12 for downstairs seating and $10 for upstairs access for all opening round and championship games. All non-championship session tickets are $10 for four games in those sessions.
