Proviso East Student Named Golden Apple Scholar: Earns Full Scholarship to Become Future Educator

June 1, 2012 09:00 AM
Maywood, IL...Proviso East High School senior, Isiah Dunn III, says that he has been inspired by many excellent teachers in Pirate Country. From his track coach Mr. Marc Jones, to his science teacher Mr. Glenn Lid, Isiah has learned what it means to have an impact on students’ lives. That is why he has worked to become one of Illinois’ Golden Apple Scholars.

The Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois program recruits and prepares bright and talented high school graduates for careers as teachers. As a Golden Apple Scholar, Isiah will receive $2,500 per year of tuition assistance for his freshmen and sophomore years and $5,000 per year for his junior and senior years. He says the support of the Golden Apple Scholars program will give him the financial support he needs to accomplish his goals, become an inspiration to others, and give back to his community.

"I just want to show people what you can do if you put in a little hard work and motivation," Isiah said.

Isiah will attend St. Francis University in the fall. In addition to the Golden Apple Scholarship, he has also been offered a track scholarship from the school.  He wants to follow in the footsteps of his current chemistry teacher, Mr. Lid, and study biology and chemistry.

Along with Mr. Lid and his track coach, Mr. Jones, Isiah credits his mother, Mrs. Goodman, and his older brother for setting examples for success and for leading by example.

Congratulations Isiah! You are a part of Proviso Rising.
