Proviso East to Host Community Champions Awards and Resource Fair March 15th

March 9, 2012 09:00 AM
Maywood, IL...On Thursday, March 15th at 6:00 p.m. Proviso East High School will open its doors to the Proviso Community as they host the inaugural Community Champion (CC) Awards and Resource Fair.

"The Community Champions Project was created with a dual purpose," said CC founder and event coordinator, VaLarie Humphrey. "The initial purpose is to bring recognition to the students that are doing the right thing by staying in school and being successful. The second purpose of the project is to bring together, in a common location, a multitude of resources for the community, the children, and their families."

As a youth and education advocate, Humphrey came to the school board to request that the inaugural Community Champions Awards be held at Proviso Township High Schools. The Community Champions Awards will honor five students from PTHS District 209, School District 88, and School District 89. The program will also celebrate a teacher who has gone above and beyond by devoting his/her time and energy to ensure that their classrooms and communities are more caring, dynamic, beautiful, healthy, and unique. During the program, there will also be a Resource Connections Fair filled with organizations who will offer vital information and resources to community members.

Proviso East officials say they are proud to host an organization that is working to acknowledge students and teachers while also strengthening community ties.

"Proviso East is very happy to host the 1st Annual Community Awards Ceremony and Resource Fair," said Proviso East assistant principal, Dr. Frankiewicz. "Its sponsor, the Community Champions Project, is honoring students who are successful in school. Students will be well represented from school districts in our community including 88, 89, and 209."

The Community Champions Awards and Resource Connections Fair takes place on Thursday, March 15th at 6:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. To learn more, please contact Ms. Humphrey at
