Marcia LaPorte, a Proviso East art teacher, said that the school has sent students to display their art work at the Annual District High School Art Competition at Triton College in every year of its existence.
"It’s a nice opportunity for our kids to be recognized," she said. "We always win at least one or two awards. I think photography’s pretty strong in the show."
Other participants in the show were Cynthia Marrufo, Kyra Berry, Norma Gascon, Shaquille Catchings, Cornell Covert, Steven Lopez, and Damian Hurt for photography. Yarime Macias, Kate Juarez, Eric Sanchez, and Ashley Duncan competed for ceramics.
Mr. Tony Valente, principal at Proviso East High School, said that he was proud of the students and their talents.
"The students are extremely talented, and they deserve every opportunity they get to put that talent on display," he said.
Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209, said that the students are good representatives of their school and of the school district.
"They exhibit some of the best work that we have to offer in our school district," she said. "This good work is representative of the quality programs we have in District 209. I am extremely proud of our students, and I appreciate our teacher going the extra mile to allow their work additional exposure through the art show."
