Mr. Glenn Lid has had a long list of honors during his career as a science teacher at Proviso East High School, ranging from being named National Teacher of the Year to being named to the National Teachers Hall of Fame.
He can add being named to the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association (IHSBCA) Hall of Fame to the list.
Mr. Lid, who has been the head baseball coach at Proviso East since 1991, will be inducted into the IHSBCA Hall of Fame at the Westin Hotel at Yorktown Center in Lombard on January 25, 2014. He said that he was surprised to receive the honor without having a stellar win-loss record during his career.
"I was quite honored that I was recognized for my persistence," he said. "It’s nice to know that your colleagues realize that wins and losses don’t mean everything."
Mr. Lid, who also coaches wrestling at Proviso East, said that he has been motivated by the story of Jackie Robinson, who broke baseball’s color barrier when he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. He said that one of his main goals is to promote the game with young African-Americans who may never have played the game before high school, but who eventually are able to compete with teams with more of a winning tradition.
"It’s always been my mission to promote the legacy of Jackie Robinson," Mr. Lid said. "So many of our students have never even played catch with their dad. It shows the character of our kids to stick with it. To be competitive by their senior year says a lot."
Mr. Tony Valente, principal at Proviso East, said that Mr. Lid is a champion for students who brings out the best in them.
"Glenn Lid is able to work well with students and motivate them to do their best," Mr. Valente said. "This is a deserving honor for him for all of his hard work with our baseball program and I congratulate him on being named to the Hall of Fame."
Congratulations to Mr. Lid!
