Francine Harrell was named the new vice president of the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 Board of Education at the board’s regular meeting on Wednesday, February 20, at Proviso Math and Science Academy.
Mrs. Harrell was nominated by board member, Brian Cross, and approved in an overwhelming vote. She takes over for Dan Adams, who became board president in January after Chris Welch stepped down after 10 years in the position.
"I think it’s great," Mr. Adams said of Mrs. Harrell’s appointment. "She’s a great board member."
Mrs. Harrell, who has been on the board since 2011, will serve as vice president until at least April, when the school board will hold its organizational meeting following the April 9 election.
In other news from the board meeting, 20 student-athletes from Proviso Math and Science Academy were recognized for their achievements.
Ms. Kim Echols, principal at PMSA, said that the 20 students have performed well in the classroom and on the playing field, done community service, and have been leaders in the school and community.
"Their commitment and dedication will pay huge dividends and put them in the driver’s seat," she said. "I’m very proud to be their principal."
Ms. Echols especially singled out Jameer Thurman, who recently placed in third place in the 195-pound division for Proviso West at the IHSA State Finals. She said that he would be her nominee for Sun-Times Student-Athlete of the Year.
Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209, said that the student-athletes are prime examples of the type of students who are part of District 209.
"Excellence is a great trait of this district and these students exemplify that," she said. "These are some of the best students we have in the district because they are not only athletes, they are scholars as well."
