Thirty-four Proviso Township High Schools District 209 students were honored for their excellence in math and science by the Society of Women Engineers and the American Association of Physics Teachers in a ceremony on March 17 at Proviso West High School.
The honorees represented some of the top students in the District, all of whom were helped along the way by their teachers, said Mr. Bob Hurley, a science teacher at Proviso East High School and an organizer of the ceremony.
"This is the most wonderful night of the year for us," he told the crowd of parents, teachers, and students. "They are here as top-rated students because somebody told them they can do good things. Science is a collaborative effort."
The honored students were able to thank those math and science teachers who had inspired them during their education. Among the recognized teachers were several teachers from District 209, including Mr. Jozef Rosko, Dr. Bozena Suwary, Ms. Mary Curran, Ms. Elaine Mass, and Mr. David Vassallo, all from Proviso West.
Shakyrak Williams, a Proviso West student, said that Ms. Curran had made math fun for her.
"She made things where I can understand them," she said.
The evening’s keynote speaker, Ms. Sainab Ninalowo from the Society of Women Engineers, said that more students need to be able to grasp basic math and science concepts to succeed in the world.
"There is so much revolution in technology every day," she said. "Everybody needs to find a way to explore and to learn. We hope they can become engineers so things are better conserved."
Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, superintendent of District 209, said that the students and teachers both have a stake in the students’ success.
"The students have done the hard work in learning the material, but the teachers also have worked hard in preparing the material in a way that is instrumental in motivating their students to learn," she said. "This kind of collaboration is vital for students in achieving academic excellence."
