Last season the Proviso East Boys Track and Field team, which includes Proviso East and Proviso Math and Science Academy (PMSA) students, qualified at the state meet in 2 relays and 3 individuals. Although they are proud of their accomplishments none of them qualified to the state finals. "As a coaching staff and as a team, we decided that this would be the last year we would not be in the finals," said Coach Marc Jones, Proviso East High School head track and field coach.

Coach Jones and the team started the 2017 season with a commitment to work harder to achieve the goal of qualifying for the State Finals.  The workout routines became more intense, athletes were punctual about practice time while remaining focused on academics.  Through accountability and dedication, the team competed at the highest level at each track meet.

It was evident that the team was stronger than ever when they competed in the West Suburban Gold Conference Championship by finishing in 4th place overall as a team.  The boys track team placed 2nd in the 2-mile relay defeating last year’s conference champions Downers Grove South. This victory pushed the athletes to win the 4x200 meter relay, 300 meter hurdles, and the 4x400 meter relay which set a new outdoor conference record in the event winning it by 100 meters. "These wins gave the team the confidence and momentum needed to win the 4x100, 4x200, and 4x400 meter relay at sectional, "said Deonte Bryant, junior at PMSA and track and field athlete.

The Proviso East Boys Track and Field team finished 4th place at the Sectionals meet as a team, earning them 13 first place medals which made them the all-sectional champions in the following events: the 4x100 meter relay, 4x200 meter relay, 4x400 meter relay, and the 300 meter hurdles.  These events earned their ticket to the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Boys State Track Meet!

On May 25,2017 Proviso East students, faculty, and staff gathered at the Proviso East circle drive to send off the team to the state track and field finals as they began their journey.

The 2017 IHSA Boys Track and Field State Finals took place on May 26 and 27at O’Brien Field on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Seven students, three from PMSA and four from Proviso East, participated in the Class 3A Boys State Track Meet with 844 qualifiers from 137 schools. The Boys Track and Field team performed at a high level of competition earning 9 all-state medals; the first all-state track athletes since 2009 season.

"There is a proud history of athletics at Proviso East and this track team has put their mark and earned their place in Proviso East sports history," said Dr. Brain Colbert assistant principal for student life and athletics at Proviso East High School.

These young men have given their best to each other, their families, their school, and their coaches and we can’t wait to see the achievements for next year’s season.

"I feel that our team has the confidence to achieve bigger and greater at the state meet next year," said Troy Blaylock, PMSA junior and track and field athlete.

"Joining the track and field team has been a great experience as it has helped me stay focused on school. I encourage those, who are interested, to join the track and field team," said Emmanuel Valtierrez, PMSA junior and track and field athlete.

"We want to thank Coach Jones for an excellent job in guiding his team through a special season. We also want to thank his coaching staff and give a special thanks to our outstanding student athletes who really put our track program back on the map," said Dr. Colbert.

PTHS D209 Superintendent Jesse J. Rodriguez, D209 Board of Education, and Coach Jones wish our graduating seniors well as they continue their academic and athletic careers at post-secondary institutions.
